Travel Interview Setup

First time meeting Matt Redman!! 😲

If you are like me, who often goes on a shoot as a one-man band, it can be hard carrying heavy gears around. Especially when you are flying.

I had an opportunity to fly to Cincinnati to attend a conference hosted by CAFO (Christian Alliance for Orphans) where over 200 organizations have gathered to rally up around caring for orphaned and vulnerable children. You can find more information about this great ministry here: https://cafo.org

Aside from getting some b-rolls of the conference, my main task was to record a series of interviews that will be put together for the simulcast Livestream. Because I knew that I would be shooting many interviews at different times of the day, I could not rely on any window lights but bring my own lights.

Below are the lighting gears that I packed in two suitcases (To see the list of full gears, see below).

Lighting Gears + Tripods

Interview was set up with two cameras. Canon C200 with Sigma 18-35mm F1.8 was used as a wide shot and C100 Mkii with Canon 70-200m F4 was used as close up shot. The key light (FalconEyes) was placed as closest to the subject and angled down using an articulating arm. It was also placed in the same side as the practical light (lamp stand) in the back. I also placed a small led torch light on the right side to make the tree stand out more. I also placed a reflector against the tripod to fill some light on shadows on subject’s neck.

Interview Set-up

I was very surprised to find how sturdy these Matthews light stands were. A bag and an adapter controller from FalconEyes were heavy enough to replace a sandbag.

Here’s the end result from both cameras:

Left (C200 w/ Sigma 18-35 F1.8), Right (C100 Mk ii w/ Canon 70-200mm F4)

Full List of Gears :

  • Canon C200 (A Cam)

  • Canon C100 Mk II (B Cam)

  • Sigma 18-35mm F1.8

  • Canon 70-200mm F4

  • 2 x Tripods

  • 3 x Matthews Light Stand

  • Boom Pole

  • Falcon Eyes RX-818 RGB (Key light)

Reflections

I’m happy with how these interviews turned out visually. But the best part of these interviews was that I got to hear the stories of so many people whose hearts have been stirred by God and devoted their lives to stand up for orphaned and vulnerable children. It certainly opened my eyes that I need to do my part to advocate for these children.

I’m thankful that God has given me this opportunity to use my passion for filming to take me to different places, meet other people, and see where God is at work.
